Civs Nemesis

Sun Sep 11, 2016 11:46 am

Do you think that in WoL there are civs that are just perfect to counter another specific civ? Are nemesis civs paired and complement each other? Or there is a huge rock-paper-scissors design between the nations portrayed? Here's the place for the discussion.

I will start, my Egypt is Russia because of their defensive bonus that makes them hard to knock down as they may have more blocaos than any other civ outpost at any time, then you will have a hard time rushing; but if you let them go late-game, you're doomed.

So, what do you think? I am not a regular player so I must be mistaken . So, is there another Egypt Nemesis? Is Egypt other civ's nemesis? Are you sure of any other in game rivalry ?

So ya there actually many counters to egypt even when played correctly. Firstly I would like to emphasize that egypt is a expert level civ and usually when played right, nemesis civs can be countered. So here is the egypt nemesis civs:
Ethiopia: "were going to build a wall and make mexico pay for it" that quote explains how ethiopia can make fellah's obsolete. Allow those towers can destroy all of egypt's early infantry and camels. Ethiopia has a military roster equipt to counter all of egypt's units except the mameluke maybe. The skirmisher units can fight mehriste, and escorts. The better ethiopian artillery options allow will defeat trash unit armies from garrison wagons. If egypt can use a few fellahs to raid effectivily this can be counteracted but the again, maintaining a economy and fighting with egypt is almost as difficult as zulu sometimes so you have to get good at it.

Paragauy: Trash units from the barracks can deal with the egyptian militart early on. Paraguay's villagers are basically skirmishers who can pick off raiding units on thier own. The Paraguay can focus on defense while sending free trash unit armies at egypt who will struggle to counter those units with egypt's early economy.

Balkan civs can scout out egyptian caravan settlements better with the cartographer

I also thought on Balkan civ's Carthographer. But as they are relatively weak in they military and with the exception of Serbians don't shine defending themselves, I think a civ like Russia is a better Nemesis. Ethiopia doesn't actually excel at military in teh early game and even if their towers can becoma into a nightmare, they will only have enough after quita a bunch of game-time. Also, as Egypt lacks buildings, if you handle fine with tactics you can turn their artillery power useless.

About Praguay....they deserve a better nemesis |-)

Thanks, glad you liked it.

If you agree,I actually propose a format to introduce a Nemesis. Where the countered civ is underlined  an the Nemesis is Bold.
For example:
In my opinion, Paraguay´s clear rival is Ethiopia.
PD: I know i did i inverse in the firts post and that i have no power here, just thing of my taste, i will do it this way but post as you like.

Let's stick to discuss this further first, I want to hear your ideas.
Also, I'd like you guys to propose a partner, so you can counter each civ's nemesis.
For example, if I'm Egypt and one of my opponents is playing Russia, what could my partner pick?

Interesting topic. Here are some of my choices for hard counters/nemesis-es
Paraguay - Serbia
Brazil - Egypt
Egypt - Bulgaria
Japan - No one

I agree that bulgaria can destroy egypt with ease. Bulgaria was built to defeat egypt, similar civs. The strong peasants can hold off everything except mehriste and naffatuns and once the industrial age comes around, the entire bulgaria infantry and cavalry force deals with anti cav making thier royal unit obsolete. I do have one counter arguement thought. I feel like, this would be one of the only situations where a egypt player may invest in fellahs by actually training them at garrisons. Eventually unless someone knows otherwise, the villager bonus that fellahs have could over power them with "enough" numbers. With a solid gold and food eco I think someone could pull it off and siege the buildings quickly with firebrand.
So here is some nemesis match-ups I made:
Egypt-Greeks (maps with fish/whales)
Brazil-Sioux
Sioux-Inca
Russians-Paraguay and vice versa
Dutch-Tupi
and best of all: everyone-Koreans (post imperial death match) if you dont believe me, we need to schedule a game later

Personally I think you must divide the nemesis civs inot two categories, rush and rest of the game. All Latinamerican civs can be a potential nemesis to all African, because they age up so much early. And to divide what is to counter a civ and what is to resist an attack. Therefore Russians are not strictly a nemesis of Egyptians, but can resist the fellah invasion.

Egypt > Bulgaria
Serbia > Paraguay
Paraguay > Africans
Spain > Latinamericans
Tupi > Latinamericans except Argentina and Colombia (never have lost to them using this two)
Japan > Colombia, Mexico
Sioux > Zulu
Tupi > Russians
Mapuche > Brasil, Colombia

All this in 1v1 :P

And partner to pick, always always Canada. The team cards will give you strong enough economy to make a little more army. Or Spain, which is very strong in all ages.

Well, I can't see the sioux countering the zulu. The impi and assegai are great against most of the sioux army early on. Bowman can handle the rest. Without artillery, the zulu can rely more on thier infantry force to deal with cavalry. I could therefore is the zulu countering the sioux. The since the sioux economy is quite bad, zulu does not have a disadvantage in income against them. The only downside is micro but then again, the hun style souix need micro as well to operate.
